| REGIONS
WITH SUPERIOR QUALITY WINES |
There
are areas in Greece where wine makers use local tradition for the production of
superior quality wines. In order to
preserve the consistency in quality the Greek legislators have
voted on a regulation with the following requirements:
-
the wines
produced must be from choice grape varieties
-
the winery should use a specific system of cultivation
-
there
should be a maximum level of vine yield, and
-
there
should be a minimum level
of sugar content in the grape must.
The regulation characterizes wines
as:
-
Appellations of Origin of Superior
Quality
-
Controlled Appellations of
Origin
Also, in the case of
Controlled Appellations of Origin, the regulation requires a detailed report for the
percentage of varieties in the vineyards, new plantings, production quantities and stock balance.
The table below defines the major regions.
